Progressive Christianity in Thunder Bay

Christina Stricker, Current River United, thanks The Rev. Gretta Vosper (See Feb 05 Observer p.16) for her presentations in Thunder Bay. Gretta spoke about the Progressive Christianity Movement. At Westminster United and Current River United she looked at current trends toward a more realistic expression of Christian beliefs in worship; as well as tracing Christianity from early beliefs to traditional and later progressive thought, espoused by such well known authors as Bishop John Spong (Bishop Spong was guest speaker at Conference in the early nineties) and Canadian Tom Harpur (The Pagan Christ).

The events attracted many United Church folk, including some from out of town, as well as Roman Catholics and Unitarians.

Red Lake-Cochenour Children help Rwandan Children

Nancy Phillips helped to organize a Fall Supper and presentation about Nu-vision Ministry, Rwanda,on the 23rd of October 04. When Kay deBoer, age 12, and Tamara Woof, age 11, heard about Nu-Vision from the advertising, they organized a yard sale to help raise money for Nu-Vision. They started by selling their Barbie dolls and personal items. When others in Red Lake heard about it they brought items for the sale too. Altogether the girls raised $420.00 for the work in Rwanda. Well done girls! God bless you for this!

Also 11 sponsors came forward to sponsor young people to go to school in Rwanda. Well done Red Lake, and Cochenour Anglican/United Churches!

KNOX PRUDEN 90 YEARS OLD

Knox United Church, Pruden Steet, Thunder Bay celebrated its 90th anniversary on February 22nd. Knox was a child of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Fort William. When the current St. Andrew's building was erected the old St. Andrew's was put on rollers and pulled by horses (not visible). It is seen here on 13 July 1913 at the corner of May and Leith Streets on its move from Brodie Street to Pruden Street, where in February 1914 it became Knox Presbyterian Church, Fort William. In 1925, Knox, as a fully independent congregation, voted to go into church union, becoming Knox United Church on June 10, 1925.

Beware red-haired clergy!

When a minister challenges

a congregation to surpass

the M & S goal, beware.

When this happened in January

the Rev. Gord Waldie, of Atikokan

made good his promise to dye his hair red

if the goal was beaten.
